Section 1 Definitions


101. Application

The definitions of terms and symbols which appear in this rule are to be specified in this section, unless otherwise specified elsewhere, and definitions of terms and symbols not specified in this rule are to be as specified in the Rules for Classification of Steel Ships(hereinafter referred to as "the Rules" in this rule).


102. Length of barge

The length of barge (Ã ) is the face of stern on the load line


distance in meters from the inside surface of stem to the inside sur- defined in 109.. However, for barges with shipshape the length of

barge (Ã ) is the distance in meters on the toad line defined 109. from the fore side of stem to the

after side of rudder post in case of a barge with rudder post, or to the axis of rudder stock in case of a barge without rudder post or stern post.


103. Length for freeboard

The length of barge for freeboard (Ã ) is 96 % of the length in meters measured from the fore side of stem to the aft side of aft end shell plate on a waterline at 85 % of the least moulded depth measured from the top of keel, or the length in meters from the fore side of stem to the axis of rudder stock on that waterlines, whichever is the greater. The waterline on which this length is measured is to be parallel to the load line defined in 109.


104. Breadth of barge

The breadth of barge (Æ ) is the horizontal distance in meters from the outside of frame to the out- side of frame measured at the broadest part of the barge.


105. Breadth for freeboard

The breadth of barge for freeboard (Æ) is the maximum horizontal distance in meters from the outside of frame to the outside of frame measured at the middle of à .


106. Depth of barge

The depth of barge (Á) is the vertical distance in meters from the top of keel to the top of upper deck beam at side measured at the middle of à .


107. Midship part of barge

The midship part of barge is the part for 0.4Ã amidships. However, for pontoon type cargo barge and similar shaped barge, the midship part of barge is the part for 0.6Ã amidships.


108. End parts of barge

The end parts of barge are the parts within 0.là from both ends of the barge.


109. Load line

The load line is the waterline corresponding to the designed summer load draught in case of a barge which is required to be marked with load lines, and the waterline corresponding to the de- signed maximum draught in case of a barge which is not required to be marked with load lines .


110. Load draught

The load draught () is the vertical distance in meters from the top of keel to the load line meas- ured at the middle of à .

111. Freeboard deck

The freeboard deck is normally uppermost continuous deck.


112. Superstructure

The superstructure is the decked structure on the upper deck, extending from side to side of the barge or having its side walls at the position not farther than 0.04Æ from the side of barge.


113. Strengthened bottom forward

The strengthened bottom forward of barge is the part of flat bottom forward from the position of 0.15Ã from stem.


114. Important system See Guidance

Important system is a system necessary for safety of life and barge .


115. Trusses

Trusses are the structure to connect the bottom and deck members by pillars and diagonals, having ample strength to effectively support deck loads.
